Half Million Expansion Announced for ‘Springs

Terrace Herald, September 29, 1965

Lakelse Hot Springs has been in operation seven years.  In June 1958 the only promise for today’s successful resort was gallons of hot water pouring out of the ground in a swamp area covering some 320 acres.  Today 55 acres have been cleared and filled and next year a $500,000 expansion program will further develop the popular spa.

Plans for a $500,000 expansion program at Lakelse Hot Springs Resort were announced today by owner Ray Skoglund.  The expansion will get underway in 1966 and with the addition of 48 new units for tourist accommodation will provide a popular resort.

Third Pool

A third swimming pool, built to regulation size, is also in the plans and swim meets will be promoted as will swimming training classes.  Already this year over 1,000 youngsters from the Terrace area have taken part in the training program at the Hot Springs.

A new hotel complex, complete with cocktail lounge, rugged stone fireplace, dining room for 60, and lobby area will be constructed, and the main traffic areas will all overlook the swimming pools.

Rugged Motif

Ray Skoglund said today, “Our motif will be one of rugged construction, using stone and wood to a large extent.  Comfort is of course our main objective.  We don’t want to lose the old carefree atmosphere the Hot Springs has always had.”

New Ski Lift

As a bolstering move for winter trade, a new T-bar ski lift will be installed across the road from the Hot Springs, within five minutes of the pools.  This part of the expansion is$25,000 expenditure in itself.  It is planned that ski instructors will be on had for teaching the sport, and night flood lights will probably be installed.  Upon making his ski lift plans known today, Skoglund said with tongue in cheek, “You’d better pray for snow.”

Marina Ready

Long range plans for a golf course were outlined by Skoglund.  He said the golf course will not happen immediately, however, he did point out that he will have a complete marina service in operation shortly and that boats will be available on a rental basis for use on Lakelse Lake.

More camping and trailer space and new washroom facilities for campers have all been included in the overall expansion program.

Return the Favor

Commenting on the potential of the area, Ray Skoglund said, “I feel that Terrace and Kitimat have a great deal to offer the traveler and tourist.  I have my roots deep in the country and intend to remain this way.  When a country has treated you well, then you must return the favor.

Denies Rumour

He denied a rumour that the Hot Springs had been sold, stating, “I have heard the rumour but it is not true.  I have, however, interested financial assistance and participation through the Power Corporation Development Co. of Canada.  This will give the Hot Springs not only Canada-wide advertising, but added strength in many ways.”

He concluded, “However large the place may grow, it ahs always been my wish that families of the Northern area may never be out priced for a relaxing holiday at the Springs. I do not wish to have the Hot Springs lose its local identity.
