Arthur and Evelyn Wagner

Art and Evelyn sitting together with their 12 children.

Arthur was born on January 2, 1909 in St. Paul, Minn. U.S.A. He came to B.C. in a covered wagon, with his German father and Sioux mother. When his father died in 1913 he was adopted by a Jones family, who brought him to Terrace. He went to school, which did not work out too well as he kept running away to the trapline with Walter Wright who adopted him indian style. The Jones' then sent him back down south. He returned later where he met Evelyn Lofeudo, they got married in Houston, B.C. in 1936. They moved to Terrace in 1937 and commenced their large family of twelve, who are:

Hazel, Melva, Arthur Jr., James, Elaine, Patricia, Susan, Diane, Joseph, judy, Vernon and Michael.

Art did a lot of hunting, fishing, and trapping with a lot of the old timers, which he loved to do. Art was mostly into logging, but did many different types of work. He owned the Terrace Bakery in the early 40's, which the army would climb the sides of the wall if the place was closed to buy some of Evelyn's pies. The bakery was located on the corner of Kalum and Greig. After selling the bakery, Art and Eve moved to their farm which was ten acres at the bottom of the overpass. It was between Pat Beaton (where the hospital is) and Joe Lofeudo's on the corner of Keith and Molitor where the Co-Op is now. Joe had bought the property from Mr. Keith.

Art had a contract for hand peeling poles with the help at times from the family. he had the pleasure of peeling a lot of the longest cedar poles in the world. Evelyn also made pies for the Lakelse Hotel, where she worked for many years. Art was also hired with his pack horse Bucky (who used to belong to Walter Warner) by a surveyor and was out for eight weeks in the summer of 1950, I do believe, to stake out the town of Kitimat, B.C. The surveyor sent Art a Christmas card with a very nice cheque to thank him for the wonderful time they had in the mountains.

Also when the Wagner's lost their home to a fire, Terrace got busy and bought the first firetruck.

Art died on April 20, 1983 and Evelyn passed away August 23, 1985. They had twelve children, fourty-one grandchildren and many, many great-great grandchildren who still live in the Terrace area.
