What's New

Les livres nouveaux en Français pour tout!

As many of you know, the library have been adding some French to our program repetoire.  We began with a bonus French reading prize in the Summer Reading Club and then we had a French storytime over the winter break.

You might not know that the Terrace Chapter of the Canadian Parents for French (CPF) have been working hard with the library to allow for these things to happen.  Thank you all so much.

Now, we have even more to be thankful for.  The CPF recently donated 69 books and 2 DVDs to add to our Junior French section.  The CPF is also planning to partner with the library to add more French materials for you to borrow!  The CPF is amazing!

While we prepare the materials for you all to borrow, you can learn more about our local CPF chapter by visiting their blog.

Ah bientôt!

It's the perfect weather for baking!

It is SO COLD outside! All that we want to do is curl up with a good book and a snack.  Don't you?

Well, we have a great literacy-building activity for you! It's time to turn on your oven and enjoy a snowflake!

***WARNING - Parents are required to help and eat.

Librarian note*** - there are so many different ways to make these yummy.  Try italian spices with parmesan cheese, honey and toasted sesame seeds, a little bit of salt, or even a sprinkling of cayene.  The possibilities are endless.

Travel back through time with Matt and Emily!

Matt and Emily have found a magical time-travelling sled, the Canadian Flyer.  On this adventure, Matt and Emily find themselves on Citadel Hill in Halifax, Nova Scotia on the morning of December 6, 1917.  As they land, the SS Mont Blanc explodes in the harbor between Halifax, Nova Scotia and Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.  What will they do?  What would you do?  What was the explosion that rocked the Maritimes like?  Find the answers to these questions and more when you read Halifax Explodes by Frieda Wishinksy.

Canadian 12 Days of Christmas

It's that time of year again.  Things are covered in a blanket of snow.  Christmas lights are being hung. The BEST PART - Christmas carols are on the radio and everyone is singing!

Sometimes though, those Christmas carols don't quite seem to fit. So, Healine Becker and Werner Zimmermann created a wonder Canadian Christmas Song and made it into a book for you to enjoy.

Did you know:

On the first day of Christmas,

My true love gave to me:

A porcupine in a pine tree.

Come check out  A Porcupine in a Pine Tree to see what happens on each day.

Do you feel that? Brrr...I think winter is coming!

Just in time for winter!  Practice your reading, math, and science skills with this yummy, sure-to-please recipe!

(with your parents help of course)

Oreo Ice Cream Cocoa

1/2 stick butter
1/2 cup sugar
1 pint Cookies & Cream ice cream
3-5 cups water

In a large saucepan, melt the butter, sugar, and ice cream together until smooth. Stir in just enough water to thin the cocoa and give it good flavor without watering it down too much. I like to add 3 cups at first, then keep adding half-cups and taking little sips until it’s perfect. The reason there’s no set amount of water to add is because different ice creams have different sugar and cream contents. So, just add it to taste. The cocoa should be sweet and creamy.
