Collect your Summer Reading Club package and check off days of reading throughout the summer in your reading record.
Each week, kids earn beads, stickers and enter to win great prizes at the end of summer too. Children who complete 7 weeks of daily reading earn a Summer Reading Club medal!
We have child and family programs geared toward children 3-12 years, family fun throughout the summer. Check our calendar for details!
- Read & Bead: The more days you read the more beads you earn for your Summer Reading Club necklace.
- STEM Thursdays, each week we will explore physics, chemistry, or technology. Space is limited, registration is required.
- Summer Crafts, each Friday we will do some fun art projects! Space is limited, registration is required.
Medal presentation and SRC wrap-up party will be held this year at George Little Park, Saturday August 22, 1:00pm.
Check Off Each Day You Read
Inside your reading record there is a ocean with 50 bubbles. Each bubble represent the days of Summer Reading Club (SRC). As you read each day, check off a bubble in the ocean.
Suggested minimum reading goal for all ages: at least 30 minutes per day
Read and Bead
The more you read, the more beads you earn to decorate it. Every 7 days of reading (7 checkmarks), you earn a token to use in the Bead Machine. Give the handle a turn, and out comes your mix of beads in a bubble! Each contains a variety of beads, (mix of solid, sparkle, metalic, glow-in-the-dark and shapes).
Every time you complete 7 days of reading, you also earn a special "Under the Sea" sticker to put inside your reading record. You will also get to put in one ticket for one of five grand prizes at the end of summer.
Every two weeks, you may collect a "brag tag" or your choice of three letters to add to your necklace!
Tips For Parents
Your involvement with your child’s reading can help make the Summer Reading Club at your library a successful and exciting adventure! Here are some ideas to help make the SRC all that it can be for your child:
- Establish a regular time for reading in your home for all members of the family.
- Help your child set a realistic goal for summer reading. The suggested minimum reading goal of 30 minutes per day can be broken down into three 10 minute sessions, or two 15 minute intervals throughout the day, follow your child’s lead and keep it fun.
- Offer to share stories at bedtime or as dinner conversation.
- Encourage your child to share their favourite stories with you.
- Appreciate all books your child selects, even the ones that look "too easy". Summer is a time for fun, after all, and you can always guide your child to a more challenging book the next time you visit the library.
- Read to your child. Even if children can read themselves, they still enjoy hearing good stories read to them. Readers in the early grades can understand far more advanced vocabulary and complex stories than they are able to read - it helps their reading later if you continue to read to them.
- Encourage older children to read aloud to you or to younger children.
- Read yourself! Make sure your child knows that you enjoy reading too. There is nothing like a good role model.
